California is one of the American states of the west coast. This state is surrounded by several states like Nevada where Las Vegas is, Arizona where the Grand Canyon is located and Utah.
La Californie est l’un des Etats américains de la côte d’ouest. Cet état est entouré de plusieurs états comme le Nevada où se trouve Las Vegas, Arizona où on peut se rendre au Grand Canyon et l’Utah.
Los Angeles is known for Hollywood of course, this world of cinema, the bold and the beautiful papalalala that any artist who wants to become famous goes there. We find of course the famous big sign « HOLLYWOOD » in height hill. From the top of this hill, you can have an incredible view of Los Angeles. There is also the Walk of Fame at Hollywood Boulevard with the Chinese Theater. When I was there, there was actually the movie premiere of « Guardians of Galaxy 2 ». Then not far from the Walk of Fame, there is Beverly Hills with Rodeo Drive with some luxurious, high end shops.
Los Angeles est connue pour bien sûr Hollywood, ce monde de cinéma, de gloire et beauté papalalala que tout artiste qui veut se faire connaître s’y rend. On retrouve bien sûr le fameux grand signe « HOLLYWOOD » en hauteur. Du haut de cette colline, on peut avoir une incroyable vue sur Los Angeles. Il y a aussi le Walk of Fame à Hollywood Boulevard avec le Chinese theatre. Quand j’y étais il y avait l’avant-première du film « Gardiens de la galaxie 2 ». Puis non loin, il y a Beverly Hills avec le Rodeo Drive avec ces magasins assez cotés.
On the beach side, there is Malibu known for the TV show « Baywatch » which was actually shot on another known beach in Los Angeles, Venice Beach. Venice is even like a small neighborhood of itself with places with pretty cool canals and houses around. On Venice Beach, there is the Muscle Beach which is known thanks to Arnold Schwarzenegger. Back in the day, he did loads of bodybuilding appearane there. Yes Muscle Beach, as its name suggests is dedicated to the culture of well-being, body and bodybuilding. Along the Board walk that connects Venice to Santa Monica, there are plenty of stalls for sports and bodybuilding.
Côté plage, il y a Malibu connu pour la série « Alerte à Malibu » qui a en fait été tourné sur une autre plage connue de Los Angeles, Venice Beach. Venice est même un petit quartier en lui-même avec des coins avec des canaux assez sympas. Sur Venice Beach, il y a la Muscle Beach qui a été connu grâce à Arnold Schwarzenegger. A l’époque, il faisait beaucoup d’apparition et démonstration de bodybuilding. Oui Muscle Beach, c’est comme son nom l’indique est dédiée à la culture du bien-être, du physique et de la musculation. Tout le long de la promenade « Board Walk » qui joint Venice à Santa Monica, il y a beaucoup de stands pour faire du sport et de la musculation.
Arrived in Santa Monica, there is the « Pier » with a miniature amusement park on the harbor. There is even a sign that Route 66 finishes there (the route 66 is the famous highway road who joined Chicago to Santa Monica. So it passed by several states; Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico and California).
Arrivée à Santa Monica, il y a la « Pier » avec un parc d’attraction miniature sur le port. Il y a même un signe qui montre que la route 66 termine ici (la route 66 est la célèbre autorout qui rejoins Chicqgo à Santa Monica. Donc elle traverse plusieurs états; Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, Nouveau Mexique et Californie).
In Santa Monica Downtown, full of restaurants, bars, shopping center. In Santa Monica, I discovered the poke bar concept in Mainland. The poke is actually a sushi in a bowl. The concept is a little similar with Subway where you choose your base, your accompaniments, your sauce, etc. You choose the size of your poke according to the number of « scoops ». My poke consisted of brown rice, 2 scoops (salmon and tuna), seaweed, cucumber, edamame, onions, sobuki, spicy shoyu sauce. Really fresh and delicious!
Dans le centre de Santa Monica, pleins de restaurants , bars, centre commercial. A Santa Monica, j’ai pu découvrir le concept de poké bar à Mainland. Le poké est en fait un sushi dans un bol. Le concept est un peu similaire avec le Subway où tu choisis ta base, tes accompagnements, ta sauce, etc. Ici, c’est plus que tu choisis la taille de ton poké en fonction du nombre de « scoops » que tu choisis. Mon poké était composé de riz brun, 2 scoops (saumon et thon), algue, concombre, edamame, oignons, sobuki, spicy shoyu sauce. Très frais et délicieux !
In Santa Monica, I ate at Umami Burger to try different burgers. Really cool burger place and very different to your typical burger place. The atmosphere is very chilled and relaxed and the service quite good. I ordered the Trio slinder with 3 different mini burgers (Hatch – roasted hatch chillies, house cali cheese, toasted garlic aoli; Truffle – trufle aoli, truffle cheese, truffle glaze; Manly – home beer-cheese, bacon lardons, smoked salt onion strings, umami ketchup, mustard spread (I had to swap this one with my friend since I don’t eat pork but got 2 truffle burgers instead…my love for cheese was fulfilled ^^).
A Santa Monica, j’ai mangé à Umami burger pour essayer des burgers assez différents. Restaurant de burger vraiment cool et très différent des restaurants de burgers typiques. L’ambiance est très détendue et le service assez bon.J’ai commandé les frites à la truffe et le Trio Slinder avec 3 mini hamburgers différents (Hatch – piments hatch rôtis, fromage cali maison, aoli à l ‘ail grillé ; Truffle – truffe aoli, fromage à la truffe, glaçage à la truffe; Manly – fromage à la bière maison, lardons, oignons au sel fumé , umami ketchup, moutarde (j’ai dû échanger celui-ci avec mon ami car je ne mange pas de porc mais j’ai eu 2 hamburgers à la truffe à la place … mon amour pour le fromage a été comblé ^^).
In Los Angeles Downtown, there are several neighborhoods; Chinatown, El Pablo the Mexican Quarter and it’s really like being in Mexico. There was a festival with a lot of atmosphere, Spanish music and dance. There is also the City Hall area near the Grand Central Market area and Little Tokyo, the Japanese neighborhood where I ate at a typical and traditional udon restaurant, Monzo. The udons, quite thick noodles, were homemade and you can even see the cook doing them in the restaurant.
A Los Angeles Downtown, il y a plusieurs quartiers ; Chinatown le quartier chinois, El Pablo le quartier mexicain et c’est vraiment comme si on était au Mexique. Il y avait un festival avec beaucoup d’ambiance, de musiques espagnoles et de dance. Il y a aussi le quartier City Hall près du quartier du Grand Central Market et Little Tokyo, le quartier japonais où j’ai mangé dans un restaurant typique et traditionnel d’udon, Monzo. Les udons, nouilles assez épaisses, sont fait maison et on peut même voir le cuisinier les faire dans le restaurant.

In Downtown is the Staples Center. If you are a fan of NBA I do not need to say more. It’s the LA Lakers and LA Clippers and I was lucky enough to watch a LA Clippers vs. Utah Jazz playoff game. Wonderful match, fire atmosphere and a buzz beater for Jazz … 95-97 final score! Here is sneak peak of this incredible and a bit noisy moment ^^!

From Los Angeles, you can take the Route 66 (part of it because all of Route 66 does not really exist as before) on Interstate 40 to get to the Grand Canyon. The Grand Canyon is about 7 hours drive from Los Angeles. We stayed at the motel for 3 days and 2 nights at Flagstaff, a very small American town and the closest to the Grand Canyon. The Grand Canyon is done by car and the entrance is $ 30 per car. There are different points of view, stop-overs; Vista Creek Pipe, Grandview Point, Moran Point, Lipan Point, Navajo Point, Desert View Watchtower.
De Los Angeles, on peut prendre la route 66 (une partie parce que toute la route 66 n’existe plus vraiment comme auparavant) par l’autoroute Interstate 40 pour aller au Grand Canyon. Le Grand Canyon est à peu près 7 heures de Los Angeles. La ville la plus proche pour y rester (on y est resté au motel 3 jours et 2 nuits) est Flagstaff, une ville très américaine. Le Grand Canyon se fait en voiture et l’entrée est à $30 par voiture. Il y a différent points de vue, points d’arrêt ; Pipe Creek Vista, Grandview point, Moran point, Lipan point, Navajo point, Desert View Watchtower.

The next day we headed to Antelope Canyon which is still owned by Native Americans. Before going there, we made a short stop at Horseshoe Bend, a nature-like horseshoe. Again, breathtaking and a natural creation of earth ingeniously done. We did Antelope Canyon Lower ($ 33 per person) with a Native American guide. A little advice, go as soon as possible in the day and especially not after 14-15h to still have some sunshine. This canyon is simply beautiful! The rays of the sun touching the canyon give a mixture of colours, orange, purple and yellow to the canyon and emphasize the minerals in the rocks of the canyon. Just sublime and the forms created by these minerals, natural events, movement of plates that have been made through the years, centuries makes the canyon really unique.
Le lendemain, on s’est dirigée vers Antelope Canyon qui est toujours une propriété des indiens natifs d’Amérique. Avant d’y aller on a fait un petit arrêt à Horseshoe Bend, une beauté de la nature en forme de fer à cheval. Encore une fois, à couper le souffle et une création naturelle ingénieusement fait. On a fait Antelope Canyon Lower ($33 par personne) avec un guide natif américain. Petit conseil, allez-y le plus tôt possible et surtout pas après 14-15h pour avoir du soleil. Ce canyon est tout simplement magnifique ! Les rayons du soleil qui touchent le canyon donnent un mélange d’orange, de violet et de jaune aux rochers et mettent en valeur les minéraux des plaques du canyon. Juste sublime et les formes créaient par ces minéraux, événements naturels, mouvement des plaques qui se sont fait à travers les années, siècles rend le canyon unique en son genre.
On the way back to LA, we passed by Lake Powell, Colorado City, Hurrican Valley, Zion Mountain Canyon with stops at the famous In’n’Out (fast food burgers from the coast West of the USA). Little secret: there is a secret menu where you can request fries style pet, fries with cheese and fried onions). Secret menus are very famous in the United States. Several fast food chains have one. Otherwise the general menu is very short and simple. This to offer burgers and fries prepared and cooked to order.
Sur le chemin retour pour L.A. , on est passé par le Lake Powell, Colorado City, Hurrican Valley (Musée des Pionniers), Zion (Zion Mountain Canyon) avec des arrêts au fameux In’n’Out (fast food de burgers de la côte Ouest des Etats-Unis). Petit secret : il y a une carte secrète où vous pouvez par exemple commander des frites « animal style » (frites avec du fromage et des oignons frits). Les cartes secrètes sont très réputées aux Etats-Unis. Plusieurs chaines de fast-foods en ont une. Sinon la carte générale est très courte et simple. Ceci pour donner des hamburgers et des frites préparés et cuits à la commande.
Then to Las Vegas where we walked on The Strip, the street where there are all the hotels, restaurants, bars, casinos in Las Vegas.

From Los Angeles, we also made a second road trip to San Francisco with a small stop in Santa Barbara, a port city on the coast in California. We had breakfast at Eladio’s at the Waterfront and lazy and peaceful time at Santa Barbara beach. Chicken sausage scramble (scramble eggs, chicken sausage, goat cheese, spinach) with brown toast, roasted potatoes and vegetables.
De Los Angeles, on a aussi fait un second « road trip » vers San Francisco avec un petit arrêt à Santa Barbara, une ville portuaire sur la côte californienne. Petit déjeuner à Eladio’s au Waterfront et farniente paisible sur la plage de Santa Barbara. Saucisse de poulet aux œufs brouillés (œufs brouillés, saucisse de poulet, fromage de chèvre, épinards) avec pain complet grillé, pommes de terre rôties et légumes.
San Francisco is a hill town but it looks more like a European than American city. In fact this is due to European influence (especially Italian) in the past. In the first night, we ate at an Italian restaurant, Nob Hill Cafe, in the Nob Hill neighborhood (as the name suggests) at the top of the highest hill with the steepest slope in San Francisco. Several points to visit in San Francisco, the Golden Gate Bridge, Fisherman’s Wharf (where we stopped to eat at a fish specialities restaurant, I ordered a crab sandwich), Marina, Aquarium, Pier 39, the Old Italian train (line F) that runs along the port with the various piers and arrives at the Financial District. There is also a China Town, Union Square with lots of shops, Powell Street and Mission that makes up the center.
San Francisco est une ville en collines mais qui ressemble plus à une ville européenne qu’américaine. En fait cela est dû à l’influence européens (notamment italienne) dans le passé. Justement le premier soir, nous avons mangé dans un restaurant italien, Nob Hill Café, dans le quartier de Nob Hill (comme son nom l’indique) en haut de la colline la plus haute avec la pente la plus raide de San Francisco. Plusieurs points à visiter à San Francisco, le Golden Gate Bridge, Fisherman’s Wharf (où on s’est arrêté pour manger dans un restaurant aux spécialités de poisson. J’ai pris un sandwich au crabe), Marina, Aquarium, Pier 39, le Vieux train italien (ligne F) qui longe le port avec les différents piers et qui arrive au Financial District (quartier de finances). Il y aussi un China Town, Union Square avec pleins de magasins, Powell Street et Mission qui compose le centre.
As you could see, in California and surroundings, in addition to these different tourist points, whatever the city you are, you can eat EVERYTHING! It’s not just burgers and pizzas lol. You can eat quite well and anyway with the heat, fast food all the time will be a little much, right?!
Comme vous l’avez compris, en Californie et ses alentours, en plus des ces différents point touristiques, quelque soit la ville où vous êtes vous pouvez manger de TOUT ! Il n’y a pas que les burgers et les pizzas lol. On peut manger assez bien et de toute manière avec la chaleur des fast foods tout le temps ferai un peu beaucoup, n’est-ce pas?!
